Founded in 1983, the Modular Building Institute (MBI) is the international non-profit trade association serving modular construction. Members are manufacturers, contractors, and dealers in two distinct segments of the industry – permanent modular construction (PMC) and relocatable buildings (RB). MBI strives to keep up with the latest trends of the modular/offsite construction industry and has expanded its membership over the years to include architects, owner/developers, and general contractors.
The mission of the MBI Educational Foundation is to expand opportunities, increase awareness, and foster growth in the commercial modular construction industry by supporting research and development, providing scholarships for students, and developing partnerships and alliances with complementary organizations.

OVERVIEW

The AIAS is looking for members to share their models to showcase the work our members do and to provide inspiration for those looking to enhance their skill sets. This competition is open to all years and skill sets – show us what you’ve got!

HOW TO ENTER

  1. Share your models that showcase commercial modular construction on your Instagram account between February 15 and June 1, 2019, to enter the competition
  2. Tell us (in 1-2 sentences) what your model is about (hint: tell us why modular construction is useful for your design)
  3. Tag the AIAS National Office and MBI on Instagram: @aiasorg and @rethinkmodular
  4. Use the following hashtags: #AIASInStudio#rethinkmodular#modularconstruction, and #InStudioModel
Each Wednesday during the competition the National Officers will select their top five (5) submissions and feature them in the AIAS InStudio Highlights on Instagram. At the close of the competition, the jury will select three winners from the submissions posted between February 15 and June 1, 2019.
Winners will be announced at the 2019 AIAS Grassroots Leadership Conference in Washington, DC.

NYC Public Space (POPS) Logo Design

A payment of $2,000 will be provided to each Awardee. The Awardee that created the logo chosen as the official New York City POPS logo will receive an additional $2,000 payment.

Design Challenge:
Since 1961, New York City has offered floor area bonuses and other zoning incentives to private developers of office and residential buildings to encourage them to provide the more than 550 POPS that are scattered about the city, especially in the borough of Manhattan and increasingly in Brooklyn and Queens. Combined, the city’s POPS provide nearly 3.8 million square feet of additional public space – equivalent to nine Bryant Parks, 24 Union Squares, or 10% of Central Park. Each POPS has a distinct identity shaped by its design, location, applicable legal requirements, owner and manager, and users.
For POPS to be well used by the public, it is imperative that residents, workers, and visitors know which spaces are indeed POPS and what amenities are required. For example, during what hours is a space required to be open? Must it provide amenities such as seating, landscaping, water fountains, bathrooms, or bike racks? If members of the public have a question about the space, whom should they contact? The New York City Zoning Resolution, from 1975 onward, has obliged almost all POPS owners to post signage on-site, identifying the space as a POPS and specifying required hours of access and amenities. Signage must also include information about who owns and manages the space and to whom a complaint may be submitted.

Design Challenge:
Participants of the architectural competition will be asked to design a building, two concert halls, spaces for lounge bars, a spacious lobby with a breath-taking view of the city, and premises for any other cultural activities. The budget for design and construction works amounts to EUR 52 million. All object designing, construction and installation as well as land plot management related costs are included in this amount.
In accordance with the terms and conditions of the architectural design competition drawn up by the municipality, the new building should accommodate up to 1,700 people in the big hall and 500 people in the small hall.

Living with Water – Waterfront Development in Hull

Hull is a city built around water, which brings opportunities and challenges. Whilst waterside living is seen as an attraction, the risk of flooding is something that needs addressing through good design.
Humber Quays West and Hull Arena is one of the city’s most prestigious redevelopment opportunities, and design ideas are being sought for this major residential-led redevelopment to celebrate the waterfront city centre location. Water resilient development is a key priority, therefore design ideas should embrace the principles of ‘Living with Water’ and produce innovative designs to deal with flood risk.
Last year, the RIBA published a report outlining what the government needs to do to help create homes and communities that are resilient to flood damage. The report, The value of flood-resilient architectural design, stresses that the UK can no longer base its approach to managing flood risk on simply keeping the water out.
